On July 1, Dr. V. Scott Koerwer became the 21st chief executive. His presidency marks a new era for Newberry College.
Koerwer is an entrepreneur in the business of higher education; he has twenty years of experience, three startups, and numerous program development initiatives around the globe to his credit. As an educational consultant, he has worked with organizations including: Johnson & Johnson, Merck, DuPont, IBM, Merrill Lynch, Black & Decker, the World Bank, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, SAIC, Samsung, Toyota Motor Corporation, McCormick, NEXTEL, Otis Elevator, and not-for-profit organizations including the Securities Industry Association and the Association of Investment Management Sales Executives.
Formerly Deputy Dean and Clinical Professor of Management at the University of South Carolina's Moore School of Business, Koerwer brings a broad range of educational perspectives to the Newberry presidency. He received his bachelor's degree from Muhlenberg College, his master's degree from Lehigh University and his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. Koerwer is also an alumnus of the Advanced Executive Program at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. In addition to the Moore School, he has served in leadership roles at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Robert Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland.
"Newberry College is a fine institution," Koerwer emphasizes. "We have the beginning of great momentum and a solid foundation for the years to come." These early days find the new president touring the campus and listening as faculty and staff share perspectives and ideas.
"July and August are two of my favorite months on college campuses. It's time to take stock and imagine all that is possible. It is also a time to remember why we are here - our students - and to be thankful for the essential mission and value of our work - the education and nurturing of future leaders. Around the campus I can see the commitment and determination in the eyes of all members of our community as we prepare for the new academic year."
As he begins his tenure, Koerwer looks forward to the opportunities ahead and says, "It is a great honor and privilege for me, my wife Christine and our daughters, Rachel and Julia, to join the Newberry community. We will serve the College with energy, enthusiasm and unwavering commitment."
